Making its fifth consecutive appearance as one of NaVOBA’s 10 Best Corporations for Veteran-Owned Businesses, Comcast Corporation perennially demonstrates its commitment to veteran-owned businesses. Ajamu Johnson, senior manager of Supplier Diversity said Comcast is committed to promoting, increasing and improving the overall level of spending with diverse businesses within its supply network, including veteran-owned businesses.
“Comcast is thrilled to be recognized by NaVOBA as one of the 10 Best Corporations for Veteran-Owned Businesses in 2011,” Johnson said. “This is the fifth consecutive year we have received this recognition. Diversity is at the foundation of corporate culture and the way we conduct business. Receiving this recognition for our efforts is a tremendous honor and lets us know we continue to have a significant positive impact on the veteran business community.”
Diversity and inclusion are a part of Comcast’s culture and heritage, and they have been top priorities since the company was founded, Johnson said. In addition to the diversity of its work force and the programming it offers its customers, the firm understands that the diversity of its supply base has been integral to its success.
“We continue to be committed to providing equal opportunity to all suppliers and to seeking diverse businesses partners,” Johnson said. “Comcast views supplier diversity as one of the many ways we broaden and enhance our business. We strongly believe in providing equal opportunity to qualified suppliers to participate in bid processes, and we facilitate nondiscriminatory business opportunities with diverse businesses. Diversity within our supply base often leads to better quality, lower prices and more innovative solutions.
Comcast became a NaVOBA Corporate member in 2009. Johnson said the membership has “increased Comcast’s visibility and access to veteran-owned business through publications like Vetrepreneur and the NaVOBA website.”
Comcast’s purchasing activity is mostly decentralized. Many of the purchasing decisions are made from different business leaders from across the country. As a result, the company is consistently working to improve communication, internal metrics and relationships with external partners like NaVOBA to ensure it has the tools and resources necessary for success.
“We are interested in suppliers who are the best at what they do,” Johnson said. “All of our vendors need to provide exceptional products/ services and great pricing. While we continue to seek additional diversity vendors, in light of the current economic conditions we have focused many of our efforts on expanding opportunities with existing vendors.”
The communications industry continues to evolve and expand. In 2011, Comcast is actively working to expand its 2nd Tier program which will increase business opportunities for diversity owned suppliers through subcontracting. “We continue to look to engage experienced innovative diversity-owned suppliers who can solve problems, cut costs and add value,” Johnson said.
