The best teams and athletes in the world have a coach. You need one too.
Football season is here again, and for those of us who are fans it’s time to celebrate. We revere the players and the coaches for the hard work they put in the off season to give us the game that we love.
Every fine athlete that performs on the teams we love to watch is developed by coaches all through life whether it’s football or any other sport. They are pushed and challenged and encouraged. Their character is developed along with their physical strength, and their leadership skills take shape as they grow along the way. Great coaches look for the best and find the spark that lies at the heart of every athlete. Whether it’s elementary school or at the pro level, a good coach is the soul of encouragement.
What has this got to do with your business?
No one builds a business alone. And you need a good coach to help you build a thriving business, just like you need excellent employees and the skilled services of a good accountant and a talented lawyer when they are necessary. A business coach can make all the difference in your success.
Each of us brings a set of skills to our business, and we’re better at some things than others. Most of us are good at our core business, whether it’s shipping services, welding, aeronautics, consulting, education and training or janitorial services. However, we may be weak in other areas, such as accounting, management, or strategic planning. This is where a business coach comes in.
You can’t do everything yourself
Many entrepreneurs struggle because they try to do it all themselves and they simply don’t have the knowledge or background to take on all the tasks that running a business requires. As the enterprise grows, it gets more complex. It’s the nature of many, if not most entrepreneurs to hold on to control of the organization, which tends to strangle the growth of the company they are trying to develop. Without the help of a good business coach who has a vested interest in helping you prosper, you may continue to struggle, or fail completely. It helps to have a wise advisor.
Coaching pays for itself
In 2003 I hired a business coach to help me with weak sales. In six months my sales tripled. But that’s not all. She helped me develop excellent organizational habits, put my office in order and identified other areas where I needed support from her or other professionals. When I stopped trying to do it all myself, my one-woman, disabled-veteran business has expanded and grown significantly and is enjoying a banner year despite a down economy.
It’s a business coach’s job to find your strengths and capitalize on them, and to help you get the best of your talent to work for you. They will also help you determine where your weaknesses are and how to best deal with them. Consider a business coach for your tool kit.
