Is franchising the next step for your business?

Franchising is probably the world’s largest business network and goes back in time, some say to the 19th Century. There are literally thousands of different franchise opportunities and business concepts out there. If properly executed, franchising is one of the most successful ways to rapidly expand a business.

Each franchisee invests their money and time in building your franchise business network. This allows you to grow exponentially with other people. You will relinquish some control because each franchisee is running their business, and although you have some control it, does become challenging.

I have personally started two franchise concepts. The first one in the mid-eighties, which I grew to over 700 operations in 30 countries, this one was in the end of its business life cycle; sort of like being a blacksmith watching the first cars driving by, not a good place to be.  My second at the end of 2000, which I have grown to more than operations in 16 countries, is at the beginning of its business life cycle; a lot more fun and much easier to grow.

There is no question that franchise businesses enjoy a much stronger success record than independent businesses and there are many studies to validate this.  The main reason is the requirement for systems and replication, you are forced to put together a program that works or you won’t sell many franchises.

Back to Basics:

Let’s start with basics – your business cannot just be an idea, you have to have a proven concept that works. That means you actually have to have a working business that is successful.  Successful means making money! Franchising is about replication so your business needs to have systems in place.

This is where your military background comes into play. Remember, you want to replicate your experience, product and service in every business with your name on it. This means consistency and everyone marching to the same drummer. Sound familiar? Just like in the military there needs to be follow-up and controls. If not then you lose control and discipline, the consistency of service or product is not delivered and your brand will suffer.

Remember, it doesn’t have to be unique, but it must fill a need, and it must be consistent.  Certainly we will all agree that McDonalds does not have the best hamburger in the world but it does have consistency and no matter where you go, it basically looks and tastes the same.

You Can’t do it by Yourself

Most small businesses are successful because of the drive and passion of the founder. However, being able to hire and train employees to do the tasks in any business is critical for long-term growth and success. Everyone is not equal, but if your business model only works because of your special skills and high-cost labor, it will not easily be franchisable and will be difficult to replicate and grow.

Franchising allowed me to grow both my businesses quicker and larger than I could ever do on my own. It allowed me to focus on the vision and growth areas instead of the day to day, which is not my strength or what I like to do.
