The Pennsylvania General Services and Military and Veterans Affairs Departments announced six construction projects to renovate Pennsylvania National Guard Readiness Centers are planned as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Both agencies are encouraging veterepreneurs in the construction business to participate in the bidding process.
The announcement comes months after Gov. Ed Rendell issued an executive order designed to increase participation of veteran-owned and small and disadvantaged businesses in Recovery Act opportunities. DGS will provide assistance to business entities seeking certification as a veteran-owned business. Both DGS and DMVA will conduct outreach to ensure businesses are aware of the opportunities.
With an estimated combined construction cost of nearly $6 million, the projects include the HVAC, mechanical, electrical and general trade areas, and are designed to improve overall building efficiency and conserve energy. The projects include improvements to existing readiness centers in Allegheny, Dauphin, Lehigh and Luzerne counties.
"Our veterans provided for a strong national defense through their military service and now, veteran-owned businesses have the opportunity to contribute to the nation's economic recovery by participating in these construction projects," said Maj. Gen. Jessica L. Wright, state adjutant general.
