With one-in-every five Serco employees a veteran, part of Serco’s ethos is doing business with veteran-owned businesses. The firm’s success in partnering with vetrepreneurs earned it its first appearance on NaVOBA’s Best Corporations for Veteran-Owned Businesses list for 2011.

“We are honored to have been named one of the 2011 Best 10 Corporations for Veteran-Owned Businesses,” said Ed Casey, Serco’s Chairman and CEO.  “This award demonstrates our continued dedication to working with the veteran community and Serco’s ongoing efforts to meet and exceed our client’s subcontracting goals.”

Daryl Scott, director of Partner Relations for Serco, said veterans’ work ethic and esprit de corps are highly desirable character traits in the workplace.  “More importantly, many of the veteran-owned businesses that we work with bring unique capabilities and specialized technical expertise to our team, resulting in better service to our clients,” Scott said.

Serco’s small business subcontracting program plans have passed rigorous government audits with flying colors; evidence of Serco’s commitment to supplier diversity.  In 2010, 42 percent of all of Serco’s subcontracted work went to small businesses.  Teaming opportunities for veteran-owned businesses exist in every area and every client we serve. In 2010, 8 percent of all subcontracting opportunities at Serco went to SDVOSBs; nearly triple the Government’s statutory goal of 3 percent.

“Being named one of the Best 10 Corporations for Veteran-Owned Businesses will provide us the opportunity to work with more veteran-owned businesses and continue to support the healthy growth of small businesses in our industry,” Scott said. “It is our hope that veteran-owned businesses will consider Serco first when they have a professional, management or IT services opportunities and they want to partner with a large company guaranteed to treat them with the utmost respect.”

Scott heads up Serco’s Office of Partner Relations (OPR). The OPR takes a proactive approach in ensuring that Serco’s success and growth are complemented with the participation of small business, including veteran-owned businesses. The OPR manages all mentor-protégé agreements, Serco’s Supplier Network, and participates in veteran-owned business outreach activities and organizations.

“We especially encourage veteran-owned businesses to register their companies with us,” Scott said. “When seeking out veteran-owned businesses, we look for unique niches and capabilities that will either round out our solution sets or support specific procurement opportunities. It is equally important that the veteran-owned businesses are familiar with our customers, have strong past performance in the area/agency of support, and are financially stable.”
