URS Corporation provides the full range of program management, planning, design and engineering, systems engineering, construction and construction management services, to name a few, to clients including thefederal government, national governments of other countries, state and local government agencies across the country and FORTUNE 500 companies and other multinational corporations.
“URS is very pleased to have been named one of the 2011 Best Corporations for Veteran-Owned Businesses by Vetrepreneur magazine, “ said Sam Artis, director of the URS Small Business Office. “Veteran-owned small businesses reflect a diverse workforce and often offer unique training and experience which complements the work we perform for our federal clients. Utilizing veteran-owned and service-disabled veteran-owned small businesses is one of the many things that URS does to support the men and women who have retired from active military service and are returning to the workforce.”
URS Federal Technical Services Small Business Liaison Officer Elizabeth Cardillo said URS recognizes that partnering with veteran and service-disabled, veteran-owned businesses is a natural fit because of their unique training and experience.
“Whether we are buying technical services or materials and products, we look to our veteran-owned team members to provide the experience, ethics and professional talent acquired from their military service. The attributes veterans offer—leadership skills, a sense of teamwork and ethical principles—are highly valued at URS
Don Fournier, director of the URS Federal Contracts Department and small business liaison officer said URS has consolidated small business and supplier diversity program initiatives across its projects to leverage resources and maximize subcontracting opportunities for veteran-owned businesses over the past three years.
“First, through pro-active engagement and education, we regularly encouraged our projects to subcontract with veteran-owned businesses, when possible, Fournier said. “This is an important company-wide initiative that compliments the other programs URS is engaged in to support veterans.”
A second factor of the program’s success is the outreach program, specifically targeting small business concerns and including veteran-owned small businesses, with the goal of providing information about URS organization and potential subcontracting opportunities.
“We participate in outreach events, including seminars conferences and trade shows, nationwide,” Artis said. “Outreach allows us to dialog with the small business community, make contacts and referrals, learn about industry trends and assess the impact of changing regulations on the subcontracting community.
