Mack Trucks, Inc. has served the United States military since 1911 and has earned a solid reputation as being durable, dependable and serviceable on the battlefield.  Mack considers itself to be a veteran, ready for duty at all times, and is fiercely committed to supporting both military truck builds and veteran-owned business as part of its 100 years of service to the United States of America.

“At Mack Trucks, Inc. and Volvo Trucks North America, we’re proud to call veteran-owned businesses our partners in the transportation industry,” said Denny Slagle, President and CEO. “This is a tremendous honor and a national recognition that enhances our company's legacy. It also serves to inspire others to greater leadership in diversity.”

Volvo Trucks North America is also strongly dedicated to promoting veteran-owned business, as it provides a key element of diversity in its supplier base that fosters competition, brand loyalty and customer satisfaction. Slagle said the entire Volvo Group is multicultural based on the belief that there is a greater and wiser awareness for different thinking, particularly in today’s global economy when innovation is so important.  The company’s guiding principles, which are defined in The Volvo Way, emphasize diversity as a way to unleash talent

“We have shifted our focus from supporting supplier diversity-related functions and events to a true supplier development objective,” Slagle said. “We have secured a global awareness of the supplier Diversity program, needs and benefits. We developed a global supplier diversity coding system for our suppliers, and we made sure that diversity qualified suppliers would not be targeted for re-sourcing under normal business circumstances.”

Volvo/Mack currently sources with veteran-owned businesses for automotive parts and non-automotive parts, products and services.

“There are no restrictions in our organization that would prevent a veteran-owned business from taking advantage of any opportunity that would meet their current product or service offering,” Slagle said.

The firm is developing a potential supplier database and new supplier introduction process that will allow it to evaluate and promote diverse, qualified suppliers within our purchasing organization.  It’s also implementing a program that will work with non-selected suppliers to help them secure the necessary resources and qualifications to be competitive with non-diverse qualified competitors on a much larger scale.

“Today we continue to build trucks for the U.S. military, but we also support our Armed Forces by looking for opportunities to work with veteran-owned suppliers in every part of our business, from central office functions to engineering to manufacturing,” Slagle said. “Across the Volvo Group, we believe there is great strength in diversity, and that it allows us to forge stronger partnerships in our communities and around the globe.”
