Coming from a family of vetrepreneurs, running a business was just in Terence King’s blood. Both King’s father and grandfather served in the military and started and ran their own successful companies after their service was complete.
“I watched both of them operate and learned valuable lessons,” King said. “Business success, like military success, is based on organization, execution and dedication to the mission. King said his 10 years working in the Navy flying the F-14 Tomcat led him to two realizations; he liked being in charge and he had developed the organizational skills and capability to be a good business owner.
He paired these skills with hard work and a solid business plan, but as many vetrepreneurs can attest, it was tough going early on. “I knew I had a solid business plan in mind but turning that idea into reality required a larger commitment then I anticipated,” King said. “The first year was very tough, making cold calls, driving from business meeting to business meeting and spending more money then I was making.”
The hard work paid off and now and Macnak Construction is a profitable business that brought in revenues exceeding $3 million last year. But, at only 38 years old, King knows that he and Macnak Construction have a long way to go.
“Each and every day of each and every week I awake with one thing in mind: success,” King said. “My partner and I will go to any distance and suffer any hardship in order to achieve our goals. Today is always the most important day, Sieze the opportunity!”
King said he’s looking for a larger veteran-owned construction firm to partner with to take the next step for his business. But, the prospect makes him nervous. “We are actively seeking a company to fill the role as a mentor,” King said. “My company is 8(a), HUBZone as well as SDVOSB certified. Finding a mentor to help us grow in a controlled and positive direction is the most nervous activity I engage in.”
