Making its third appearance in a row, Philadelphia, Pa.-based Comcast Corporation once again demonstrated its commitment to VOBs and has earned the honor of being named one of the 10 Best Corporations for Veteran-Owned Businesses.
"We’re excited to receive this prestigious award from the National Veteran-Owned Business Association," said David L. Cohen, executive vice president. "The skills and knowledge learned through military service have created many successful entrepreneurs and businesses, and for years Comcast has been committed to identifying and expanding opportunities for their continued success."
Ajamu Johnson, senior manager, supplier diversity, said Comcast is committed to promoting, increasing and improving the overall level of spending with diverse businesses within its supply network.
"Our vision at Comcast is to provide access and opportunity to all suppliers, including minority-, women-, veteran- and service-disabled, veteran-owned businesses," Johnson said. "This contributes to the success of our company."
Johnson said Diversity and inclusion have been a part of Comcast’s culture and heritage since the company was founded 45 years ago.
"In addition to the diversity of our employees and products, we believe that the diversity of our supply base is integral to our success. Comcast is thrilled to make the NaVOBA 10 Best Corporations for Veteran-Owned Businesses list in 2009. This is the third consecutive year we have received this recognition. Diversity is at the foundation of our corporate culture and the way we conduct business, and receiving recognition for our efforts as one of only ten companies across the nation is a tremendous honor."
Johnson said the company created a set of metrics a few years ago for all of its geographic divisions in order to establish benchmarks and assess the overall efficiency of the company’s efforts. This provided uniform measurement and goals since Comcast’s purchasing activity is mostly decentralized and many purchasing decisions are made from different business leaders from across the country.
"This year, we have revamped our metrics system and created an additional focus on the specific areas, such as spending activity, outreach and mentorship," Johnson said. "We are always looking for ways to work with diverse suppliers, and we continue to focus on expanding opportunities with our existing vendors."
