Sarah Lee, owner of Nashville-based Sarah Lee Photography, has taken on a really ambitious challenge. Calling her project “A Vicious Cycle,” she has committed to riding her bicycle more than 4,300 miles across America to honor fallen servicemembers and raise awareness for veterans’ issues.
Lee, a former Army sergeant and Operation Iraqi Freedom combat veteran, will depart the first week of May from Yorktown, Va. and will continue pedaling westward until she reaches the San Francisco Bay – literally from sea to shining sea.
“I want to experience the land that I love, the country I fought for and swore to defend, in a way that will be both gratifying and grueling,” Lee said.
Lee said her goal is to honor her fallen brothers and sisters who gave their lives for our country.
“I want as bring awareness to the 22 Veterans we lose every day to suicide and inspire and unite other veterans who feel at war with themselves like I do,” Lee said. “I need to prove to myself that I not only want to be here, but deserve to be here.”
She expects the journey to take several months and last nearly all summer – forcing her photography business to be on hold during prime earning moths in that business. To help fund the journey she is producing handmade, custom paracord bracelets.
“They’re actually pretty freaking cool, too,” Lee said.
